Our client in Portsmouth City Council is seeking an experienced Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO) to join their Children's Social Care service. This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified Social Worker with substantial statutory children's social care experience and previous IRO experience to play a key role in ensuring children and young people receive high-quality care, protection and support.
Key Responsibilities
- Chair Children We Care For reviews and Child Protection Conferences, ensuring meetings are inclusive, restorative and focused on positive outcomes.
- Meet with children and young people in person as part of their reviews, ensuring their wishes and feelings are central to planning.
- Provide independent oversight of care planning, promoting high-quality plans and ensuring permanence is achieved without unnecessary delay.
- Monitor the progression of care and protection plans, challenging drift and escalating concerns where necessary.
- Ensure Child Protection Plans are SMART, co-produced with families and focused on reducing harm.
- Apply the Family Group Decision Making model to support family-led planning.
- Consult with parents, carers and significant others to ensure effective partnership working.
- Provide professional advice and support to operational teams and multi-agency partners.
- Contribute to Quality Assurance Frameworks, audits and service improvement activity.
- Support LADO cover when required.
- Maintain accurate records and produce clear, concise and timely reports, minutes and decisions.
- Work collaboratively with children, families, carers, professionals and partner agencies.
- Manage a busy and complex workload effectively, meeting statutory deadlines and national standards.
- Travel within Portsmouth and, where required, further afield for reviews, including occasional overnight stays.
