Behind the Placements: A Conversation with Our Head of Complex Care Recruitment

In Complex Care recruitment, the right match can genuinely change a life. Behind every successful placement is a recruiter who takes the time to understand the people involved, their strengths, their challenges, and what kind of support will make the biggest difference.

We sat down with our Head of Complex Care Recruitment to talk about what makes this part of the sector so meaningful, what it takes to succeed, and the moments that remind us why this work matters.

Finding Purpose in a Specialist Field

“I’ve worked within Complex Care for around 18 months now. I originally started in healthcare recruitment but wanted to focus on something that had a deeper impact. Supporting people who rely on specialised care, and helping to find professionals who can truly make a difference - felt like the right next step.”

That motivation to do more than fill a vacancy is at the heart of the team’s approach. Complex Care isn’t just about matching skillsets; it’s about understanding the human side of care and the long-term impact of consistency, empathy, and trust.

What Makes a Great Complex Carer

When asked what stands out in a great candidate, the answer was simple: “It’s all about who they are as a person. The CV tells me they can do the job — but I want to know if they’re patient, resilient, and genuinely committed to the process. Complex Care can be tough at times, but when you see someone grow and make progress, it’s incredibly rewarding.”

That’s why every potential carer meets with the team on a one-to-one basis, either in person or over video call. “Those meetings are the best part of the job,” they add. “You get to meet people who give so much of themselves to others. Their empathy, their sacrifices: it’s inspiring every single day.”

Building Trust Through Transparency

Recruitment in this field is all about relationships and that starts with honesty.
“Being transparent from day one and keeping communication constant is key. Clients and candidates trust us because they know we’ll always be upfront. That’s how we build long-term partnerships, not just placements.”

For Tempest, that commitment to openness extends beyond the first introduction. The team stays in regular contact with both carers and clients, ensuring that support remains consistent and issues are resolved quickly.

Making a Real Difference

One story that stands out involves a young person struggling with severe anxiety and self-harm in a long-term CAMHS package. “The case had been difficult to staff for months,” they recall. “Finding consistency was the biggest challenge.”

After a careful search, the team placed a specialist mental health nurse with the right clinical experience and the right personality fit. The result was transformative.

“A few weeks later, we received feedback from the clinical lead that the young person’s engagement had improved dramatically. They were back at school part-time and showing real progress. Knowing that the right placement helped make that stability possible, that’s why we do this.”

Why Complex Care Matters

Complex Care can be demanding, but it’s also one of the most rewarding areas of recruitment. Every successful match represents not just a professional achievement, but a meaningful change in someone’s daily life.

At Tempest, our Complex Care team continues to grow with that shared mission in mind: connecting skilled, compassionate professionals with the individuals and families who need them most.
